Sherry LaVerne Owens

Sherry LaVerne Owens, (formerly Sherry O. Mercer), taught her children many life lessons, one of which was tenacity in the face of adversity and Sherry demonstrated that through many years of physical illness but on Tuesday, July 11, 2017 she won the battle and is now perfectly whole again. Her family will celebrate her victory at 3 PM, Sunday, July 16, 2017, at First Moravian Church officiated by Pastor Tony Hayworth and greet friends following the service in the church fellowship hall.

In 1941 Sherry was born in Mecklenburg County, NC to the late Clarence Monroe and Othelia “Jackie” LaVerne Knowles Owens. In 1959 she graduated from Curry High School. She and her former husband, Alvin Herbert Mercer, owned and operated Giant Scotch Wash near Summit Avenue in Greensboro and she also was employed at Curtis Meat Packing of Greensboro and Intex Corporation in Mt. Airy.

Her strong faith and love for the Lord has been her strength. Sherry was a lifetime and very active member of First Moravian Church where she participated in the choir, church events and classes. Her passion was cooking and she loved to experiment in the kitchen pouring over cookbooks until she found the new recipe she wanted to try. On the first Monday of the month Sherry looked forward to getting together for lunch with her Curry classmates. She was a loyal friend who was quick to laugh and smile and had a sweet and helpful spirit.

Surviving are her daughters, Janet Mercer and spouse Bruce Linton of Conway, SC and Barbara and Mike Beasley of Clayton, NC; grandsons, Keith , Bobby and Chris Ellison of Myrtle Beach, SC; great grandchildren, Emma, Jeremy, Jayden, Lhena, and Sienna and their mothers. In addition to her former husband, Alvin she is preceded in death by her son, Carl Alvin Mercer.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to First Moravian Church, 304 Sout Elam Avenue, Greensboro, North Carolina, 27401. The family extends their sincere gratitude to the staff of Beacon Place for their tender care of Sherry during her brief stay and making such a difficult time easier through kind words and humor.
