Sarah “Sally” Gorrell Kuratnick, beloved wife, daughter, sister, aunt and friend passed away suddenly on April 12, 2024. She was the daughter of the late Sarah Swain Gorrell and Robert Pinkney Gorrell. Sally was a lifelong resident of Greensboro and active in the community. She was a proud member of the first graduating class of Greensboro Day School and attended Peace College where she was elected president of the honor board. Because of her love of people, she excelled in all her work endeavors. Sal never met a stranger and will always be remembered for her joyful spirit, warmth, interest in others and dry quick sense of humor.
She took great pride in learning how to hunt and fish from her father. Her love of hunting and fishing led her to Africa, Alaska, the Snake River and the Florida Keys. All along the way, Sally made lifelong friends across the globe while sharing fine food and champagne.
Sal demonstrated her competitive spirit from the very beginning. She was the preemie who wasn’t expected to make it; a top marksman putting men to shame; and an avid cheerleader for Duke Basketball teams. Mondays were dedicated to her “card girls” and Tuesdays and Thursdays to teeing it up with her “golf girls.” She was an outstanding athlete excelling in basketball with a keen eye of the floor and an 80% free throw shooter. In recent years, her competitiveness was especially apparent sitting with her at a Greensboro Day School girls basketball game. Sally knew every girl on the team, shared her coaching wisdom and loved each and every one of them.
She was the current president of the Gorrell Family Foundation and a member of the Greensboro Garden Club, Greensboro Country Club, Debutante Club of Greensboro, Greensboro Cotillion, Life member of Safari Club International and Grace United Methodist Church.
Sally is survived by the love of her life, husband David Michael Kuratnick; sister, Mary Gorrell Jones (Chuck) of Greensboro; brother, Bob Gorrell ( Sabet Stroman) of Wolfeboro, NH; 11 adoring nieces and nephews and sister-in-law, Mary Ann Kuratnick.
A celebration of life service will be held Saturday, April 20, 2024, 3:30 p.m., at Grace United Methodist Church, 438 W. Friendly Avenue.
In honor of Sal’s deep love for Greensboro Day School the family requests memorials be made to Greensboro Day School 5401 Lawndale Drive Greensboro, NC 27455.
