A graduate of Page High School and NC State, he was an owner of Port Sherrill Marketing and an elder at First Presbyterian Church, where he began the tradition of a parent walking with their child down the aisle on Palm Sunday, waving palm branches.

In addition to his parents, Rusty is survived by his sister, Nancy Sherrill Horner, husband Kevin; his three children: Blair Sherrill Penny, husband Austin, Russell Hobson Sherrill IV and Elizabeth Dawson Sherrill; his beloved grandson, Jack Garrison Penny; his two nephews, Cameron and William; and many cousins.
