A graveside service will be held at 2:00 pm Monday, December 17, 2012, at Gilmore Memorial Park in Julian.
Born in Long Beach, California, Ronald retired from the United States Navy after 20 years of service. He served on the same ship with his stepfather, saw one of the first nuclear explosions on Christmas Island and was in the movie Tora, Tora. His commendations achieved during his time in service include the good conduct award, the Navy expert pistol medal, the Vietnam service medal, the Vietnamese gallantry cross, the china service, and the Vietnam campaign medal. Ronald traveled all over the world from Australia, Hong Kong, Hawaii, and Alaska. He retired from the Guilford County Sheriff’s Department after 21 years of service. After retirement he worked for his friends, Bob, Chris, and Pat Butler at Bob’s Convenient Market for 14 years. He was preceded in death by his mother, Ida Ell Marshall Smith; stepfather, Swanson C. Smith, and a half-brother, Mark Smith.
He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Juanita Caudill Miller; son, Ron Jr.; daughter, Tribby; granddaughter, Amanda, all of California; half-brother, Swanson Smith of Asheboro; step-daughters, Regina Lowery and Diane Pritchard and her husband R.O. Pritchard; step-grandson, Dewayne Lowery; step-great grandchildren, Mia, Hailey, and Dustin Lowery; brother and sister-in-law and favorite traveling buddies, Ray and Elane Caudill of Fort Wayne, Indiana; sister-in-law Pearl Whitt of Dublin, Virginia; and his best buddy and favorite companion, his dog Dook.
The family will receive friends from 6 until 9 pm Sunday evening, December 16, 2012, at Hanes-Lineberry Vanstory Chapel.
