Roger Murphy Thompson

A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, April 30, 2016 at Peace United Church of Christ, 2714 West Market Street. Interment will follow in Guilford Memorial Park Cemetery, 6000 West Gate City Boulevard, in Greensboro.

Roger was born August 30, 1930, in Guilford County, NC to the late Ray C. and Beatrice Edwards Thompson.

Roger served in the Navy from August 1948–August 1952 and was a draftsman in Corps of Engineers in the Kwajelein Islands in the East Pacific for 20 years. Roger was a lifetime member of Peace United Church of Christ.

In addition to his parents, Roger was preceded in death by his younger brother, Rudy. Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of 32 years, Nancy Bell Thompson of Greensboro; children, Dr. Richard L. Gilbert, Jr. and his wife, Mary Thomas, Jeff Gilbert and his wife, Katherine, Philip Gilbert and his wife, Joanne, Kemp Gilbert and his wife, Kelly; grandchildren, Rick, Tanner, and Maxton Gilbert, Hannah, Callison, and Noah Gilbert, Emma and Grace Gilbert, Seth, Blake, and Mitch Gilbert; brother, Ray C. Thompson and his wife, Ruth; sister, Patricia T. Gunn and her husband, James as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family.

The family will receive friends prior to the service at the church from 10:00 until 11:00 am.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Peace United Church of Christ, 2714 W. Market St., Greensboro, NC 27403 or to Hospice and Palliative Care of Greensboro, 2500 Summit Ave., Greensboro, NC 27405.
