

Funeral services will be held on Friday, May 9, 2014 at Guilford College United Methodist Church at 2:00 pm. Interment will follow Bethel United Methodist Church in Oak Ridge, NC. Visitation will be held on Thursday, May 8, 2014 at Hanes Lineberry North Elm Chapel from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm.
Robert Charles “Bob” Gordon was born in Stokesdale, NC on December 10, 1931 to the late Ralph Charles Gordon and Vassie Pope Gordon. He grew up in Summerfield, NC and was a graduate of Summerfield High School where he played basketball and football. He was awarded a football and basketball scholarship to Guilford College.
His college was interrupted by the Korean War. He was in the Naval Reserves and was called to active duty in October, 1951. He was a Naval Seabee for two years serving in the South Pacific on Kwajalein Island. When discharged he returned to Guilford College and continued his education receiving a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1957.
He was Director of the Red Shield Boys Club and then worked for some time with the U.S. Gypsum Company. In 1965 he was employed by the Georgia Pacific Corporation as Manager of the Greensboro Distribution Center. In 1983 Georgia Pacific moved him to Atlanta to manage the Wood Products Division. In 1985 he was made Manager of the International Export Division-Wood Products.
For the next ten years he and Betty travelled the world selling and exporting wood. In 1995 he retired to their mountain home at Mount Mitchell Golf Club.
Bob is survived by his wife of 62 years, Betty Lowdermilk Gordon; son Robert (Bob) C. Gordon, Jr. and wife Melanie; daughters, Bonnie Lynn Gordon of Durham, Elizabeth (Beth) Ann Airington and husband James of Atlanta; five grandchildren Robert Charles (Chad) Gordon, III of Greensboro, William Connor Gordon of Charlotte, NC, Taylor Elizabeth Airington, Peyton Mae Airington and James Michael Airington, Jr. of Atlanta; sister-in-law Mary Jane Gordon, Dot Apple, Ruth Frericks, Frances Murray and brother- in-law Paul Lowdermilk and several nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Durham County Community Living Program, 3205 Hillsborough Road, Durham NC 27705 in his memory.
