Robert “Bob” Gibbs Mayo, Jr., 83, a resident of Greensboro passed away into the open arms of our Lord and Savior on Tuesday January 16, 2018 at Moses H. Cone Hospital. He was born November 19, 1934 in Burlington, the son of Robert Gibbs Mayo, Sr. and Frances Smith Mayo.
Bob was retired from the P. Lorillard Tobacco Co. after 39 years of service. He was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps and loved his country. Bob loved gardening, fishing, raking leaves and any yard work. He loved his family and most importantly he loved his Lord and Savior. Bob was best known for his lively and fun filled humor. He loved people and never met a stranger. He met everyone with a smile and open arms. Bob had many fish tales to share as he was an avid fisherman. He loved making people laugh and have a good time. Bob was full of joy and will be missed.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Ronnie Mayo and a sister, Jean M. Adkins.
He is survived by his wife, Ruth Dunn Mayo of the home; daughter, Teresa M. Newbill (Louie) of South Boston, VA; son, Tommy Mayo (Annette) of Pleasant Garden; stepson, Paul Winslow (Ann Marie) of Edenton; sister, Mary Sue Shafner of Greensboro; sister-in-law, Henrietta Mayo of Greensboro; grandchildren, Karen Howerton (Brandon), Bryan Newbill (Ashleigh), Kristen Mayo (Joe), Daniel Little; great grandchildren, Cadence and McKenzie Howerton; nieces, Lisa Mayo Bradshaw (Neil), Marcia Neese (Jim), Cathy McIntrye; nephew; Tommy George, Luke Neese; great nieces, Kendra, Caroline, Samantha, Sophia; great nephews, Nathanial, Dillon and a host of family, friends and special friends of the family, Becky Howerton, Ricky Newbill, Tommy Durham, Jr. and Jackie, Steve and Kris of Wales, United Kingdom.
Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Grace Baptist Church 2008 Fairfax Rd., Greensboro, NC 27407 conducted by Pastor Russell Terry, Pastor Todd Nance and Pastor Paul Coward. Interment with military honors by the Randolph County Honor Guard will follow in Guilford Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the church from 1:30 p.m. until service time.
Serving as pallbearers will be Bryan Newbill, Brandon Howerton, Tommy George, Neil Bradshaw, Larry McNeil and Wayne Berry. Honorary pallbearers will be Robert Pollard and Tommy Durham, Jr.
