He was born February 21, 1954 in Atlanta, Georgia to Pierce Evan Poole Sr and Retha Mae “Bobbie” (Gilmore). He is survived by his three daughters: Carrie, Erin, and Maxine, and surrogate-fourth-daughter, Emma, as well as many, many nieces and nephews spread throughout the country.
Pierce, or “Butch” as he was known to many, grew up in the mill neighborhoods of Greensboro, North Carolina, and maintained many lifelong friendships from those times. He attended Page High School, and went on to work for local businesses like JP Stevens, AMP, Guilford Mills, and John Deere.
Many will know that he spent the last several years of his life fighting a rare blood disorder that, over time, stole parts of him away. It never stole his gift of talking to people and making friends wherever he went, though!
We are proud of how our father faced his illness, and never once saw him pity himself. He fought hard to the end, only stopping his over-7 years of dialysis when doctors refused him any more.
We are thankful, and we know he was thankful, for all of the friends and acquaintances who stayed in touch…even if communication became rather one-sided towards the end. And we are thankful for his church family at The Wendover Avenue Church of Christ. They gave him something to look forward to every week, and he loved participating in services as much as possible.
We are also thankful for the wonderful ICU staff at High Point Regional Hospital and all those who were involved with caring for him at Beacon Place hospice in Greensboro, where he passed.
Finally, we are thankful for the knowledge that having committed his life to Christ, he has gone over to a place where he is whole, happy, and awaiting our reunion one day.
The family will be receiving visitors at a family home on this Friday, May 19th, from 4:30-6:30pm at 2608 Springwood Drive, Greensboro, North Carolina, 27403.
In lieu of flowers, etc we ask that you search out a local feral cat rescue organization in your area and make a small donation in honor of Butch and his compassion for small, overlooked things.
