Phoebe Honig Schlanger was born in Brooklyn, NY, February 11, 1922, the daughter of Frances Flaum Honig and Joseph Honig. She graduated from Brooklyn College in 1944 and received a master’s degree in speech pathology from the University of Wisconsin in 1945. She returned to teach at Brooklyn College, where she met her future husband, Bernard, who was also teaching there. They married and moved to Madison, Wisconsin, where Bernard received his PhD in Speech Pathology. They were married for 43 years until Bernard’s death in 1991.
Her career included teaching English at Vineland High School in Vineland, NJ and teaching speech pathology at the following institutions: Marietta College; West Virginia University; Ohio State University; Montclair State University and Lehman College of The City University of New York. She retired after 17 years at Lehman College and was awarded the title of Professor Emeritus. She had numerous publications in the field of speech pathology, some of which included collaboration with her husband. She was an active member of the American Speech and Hearing Association and often gave presentations at their meetings.
She had many interests outside of her academic career. She had always been interested in theater and performed in many plays in high school and college. She directed some plays while teaching at speech departments early in her career. She shared a love of tennis with her husband and they frequently played together. She was an avid cook and baker and shared many recipes with friends and family. She enjoyed petit point and created some beautiful coverings for ottomans. She frequently wrote poetry, which she often used to help her clients with speech problems. She enjoyed classical music and travel.
She has three sons: Harley, living in Potsdam, Germany; Larry, living in Summerfield, NC; and Michael, living in Blauvelt, NY. She has eight grandchildren.
