Mr. Paul Hill Gibson, 99, a Guilford County resident for 94 years, died Sunday, February 1, 2015 at his home following a brief illness.
A funeral service will be held Thursday, 11:00 a.m., at First Christian Church, 1900 W. Market St., where he was a member, officiated by Rev. Lee Hull-Moses and Father Randy Hoover-Dempsey. The family will receive friends in the fellowship hall following the service. A private burial will follow.
Paul was born July 20, 1915 in Ansonville, NC, the son of William Franklin Gibson and Hannah Gertrude Hill Gibson.
Paul was a veteran of the US Army serving during WWII. He was employed with the Guilford County Sheriff’s Department since 1944 and was elected sheriff in 1966 and remained sheriff until his retirement in 1982. Paul was a past president and secretary-treasurer of the NC Sheriffs Association. He was a member of the National Sheriff’s Association, National Sheriff’s Crime Prevention-Operations-Youth Activities Committee for 8 years, NC Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission for 10 years, Elks Club, the 100 Club and was a Thirty Second Degree Mason, and Shriner. Paul will be remembered by his wonderful sense of humor and devotion to his family.
In addition to his parents, Paul was preceded in death by his wife, Bee Dempsey Gibson, married 66 years, and his brothers, Ellsworth Franklin Gibson and Robert Hughes Gibson.
Surviving are his children, Ann G. Cowles (Arthur H.), Paul H. Gibson II (Jane), Barbara G. Lawing (Larry), Patricia G. Nelson (Andy), Lou G. Stadler (Garr) and Jeff Gibson (Ellen); grandchildren, Kelly Alston, Doug Burroughs (Melissa), Andy Nelson (Boo), Paige Bledsoe (Otis), Tracy and Ryan Nelson, Shay Gibson (Kelli), Sara Jane Gibson, Alyssa Stadler, Lindsey Stadler, Lane Lawling, J.P. Gibson, Brittany and Miles Boardman; great grandchildren, Sam and Erin Alston, Megan and Jackson Burroughs, Charlie and Riley Bledsoe and Mady and Kensi Lawling.
Visitation will be Wednesday, 6:00-8:00 p.m., at Hanes-Lineberry N. Elm Chapel, 515 N. Elm St.
