Nancy was born May 21, 1932 in Troy, NC to loving Christian parents William Thomas Shankle and Cathrin Kerns Shankle. She was preceded in death by her husband, Reid Patterson Kerr, father, William Thomas Shankle, mother Cathrin Kerns Shankle and brother, William K Shankle. Survivors include her daughter Beverly D. Kerr of Suwanee, GA, son Reid P. Kerr Jr. and wife Leslie and her beloved grandchildren, R.P., Payton and John Kerr of Kernersville, her brother Clemm and wife Dorothy Shankle of Southern Pines, sister-in-law Mrs. W.K. Shankle of Greensboro, a host of nieces and nephews, great nieces and great nephews and many many friends.
Nancy was a teacher both professionally and personally. She taught at Irving Park and Sumner Elementary Schools. Very important to her was West Market Street United Methodist Church where she was active in many capacities: Sunday School Class, Vacation Bible School, and volunteer at many functions within the church. She loved her family so very much and gained much joy from spending time with and doing things for her grandchildren with whom she shared many interests and activities. She also enjoyed immediate and extended family gatherings, Wednesday lunch with friends, Sunday school fellowship, school teacher luncheons, various performances, mini vacations and various gardening projects.
She enjoyed hand writing personable notes and passing on her compassion for life. Her inspiration and optimism assisted many others in their walks through life. She was able to celebrate her 50th wedding anniversary; school reunions, her children's career successes; and especially her grandchildren's accomplishments. Each grandchild had a special place in her heart and she in theirs. She was grateful to be able to enjoy a special closeness with them.
We are so thankful to God for giving us each moment with her. The family wishes to give special thanks to Hospice of Winston Salem for their excellent care and all her friends and neighbors in Kernersville, Greensboro and throughout.
The Kerr family requests any gifts or donations in memory of Nancy be given to West Market Street United Methodist Church or Greensboro Urban Ministry. Her friends should remember her over a frosty or lunch with friends or family.
