Myrtle Marie Dyson Allegood, known best by her family and friends as Marie, died Saturday, September 3, 2022. She was 96 years old. Marie was born in Cypress Grove, NC, to Edgar and Vada Peterson Dyson.
Her earliest memories were of growing up with four sisters and being raised by their loving father. At young ages, Marie and her sisters, who predeceased her, lost their mother as a result of a complicated childbirth.
She had a long career with Bell South, formerly Southern Bell, and eventually retired in 1983. Prior to her retirement, she was a hard worker and a dedicated mother to her three beautiful children. Life was not easy but she never took a day of it for granted. In spite of the difficulties, she found happiness in the simple things and relied heavily on her faith in God.
Marie’s favorite hobbies were traveling, dancing, gardening and spending time with her family. She was very close to her three children, Carla Marion (Daniel), Brenda Allegood and Wayne Allegood, who survive her. In addition to her children, Marie is survived by her one and only grandchild, Shannon Cockerham with whom she had a truly perfect relationship for 51 glorious years and two great grandchildren, Mason Clement and Elise Clement.
The family requests that donations be made in Marie’s memory to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
Marie’s life will be celebrated at 3 PM, Wednesday, September 7 at Hanes-Lineberry Funeral Home, 515 N. Elm St., Greensboro. The family will greet guests during a reception immediately following the service. In a private ceremony, Marie will be laid to rest in Greenwood Cemetery, Greenville, NC.
