Michael Nelson Austin

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, February 14, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. at Christ United Methodist Church. Family visitation will be held following the service. Interment will be at Guilford Memorial Park.

Mike was born in Stanly County, North Carolina to Conrad Nelson Austin and Mary Alice Roberts Austin. He was a member of the Boy Scouts, General Greene Council. He was a graduate of Grimsley High School and attended Mars Hill College and the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, School of Music. He graduated from the University of Phoenix with a BS degree in Business Management.

Mike was a professional percussionist who played in North Carolina and South Carolina. He especially enjoyed playing Broadway musicals and with local Symphonies. At the time of his death he was the principal percussionist for the Salisbury Symphony.

He was employed by Lincoln Financial as a Corporate Wireless Administrator. He was a member of Christ United Methodist Church. He loved the Washington Redskins, Carolina Panthers and was an avid Duke Basketball fan.

Mike was preceded in death by his father, Conrad Nelson Austin. He is survived by his soulmate and constant companion, Julie Wheeler; mother, Mary Alice Austin; brother, Kenny Austin and wife Jacque all of Greensboro.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Music Memorial Fund at Christ United Methodist Church, 410 North Holden Road Greensboro, North Carolina 27410 or to the Salisbury Symphony Orchestra, P.O. Box 4264 Salisbury, North Carolina 28144 in memory of Michael Nelson Austin.
