Matthew Barton Wolf, 58, of Greensboro, N.C., and formerly of Boalsburg, Pa., died unexpectedly Friday, Dec. 20, 2024. Matt was born February 16, 1966, in Washington, Pa., the third of four children of Joseph Benjamin and Rosemary Withum Wolf.
Growing up in Avella, Pa., Matt fished, explored cow pastures and discovered the greatest blackberry patch of all time. He played youth baseball, clarinet and high school basketball and was involved in Boy Scouts. He attended Avella schools and graduated in 1984 from Immaculate Conception High School in Washington. During his high school and college years, Matt worked at Wendy’s, Bob Evans and 84 Lumber, all in the Washington area.
He began his collegiate years at Penn State Beaver and graduated with a physics degree from Wheeling (W.Va.) Jesuit College, where he met his future wife and best friend, Lisa.
He left his graduate studies at John Carroll University in Cleveland, Ohio, for a job at Testex and a career in nondestructive evaluation in the nuclear and petro-chemical industries. He became an expert in his field and a master in designing eddy current probes, for which he developed multiple patents. He worked at Zetec, GE, Eddyfi and finally with the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI). Through his job, he traveled to Alaska, Canada, Argentina, Columbia, Saudi Arabia, Japan, Europe and other locations throughout the world. Matt was not only respected and admired for his expertise but was beloved and trusted by all who worked with him. All who met him grew to consider him friend or family.
He and Lisa, who were married May 22, 1993, lived in Houston, Seattle, Export, Pa., and Boalsburg, where they lived for about 20 years until relocating to Greensboro six months ago with their fur children, goldendoodle Teddy and cat Phoebe.
Quiet and unassuming, Matt was “the funny one,” as he was deemed by his mother and his siblings. He had a natural way of bringing light, laughter and comfort to any situation. He was a master of dad jokes and was an unwavering protector, supporter and cheerleader for his wife and daughters. With all that he accomplished professionally, Matt was most proud of his daughters and of being a father. He was adored by his girls for his quiet strength, wisdom and goofy sense of humor. He found humor in the smallest, simplest things and beauty in the small details of life. Family was everything to him.
Surviving are his wife, Lisa Jennings Wolf of Greensboro; three daughters, Madelyn Wolf of Tel Aviv, Israel, Audrey Wolf of State College, Pa., and Lydia Wolf of Rochester, N.Y.; his mother, Rosemary Wolf of Wheeling, W.Va.; a sister, Christine (Christopher) Tarr of Triadelphia, W.V.; two brothers, Jason Wolf of Monroeville, Pa., and Damian (Candace) Wolf of Morgantown, W.Va.; and a large extended family throughout the country from Maryland to California.
His father died March 25, 2023.
Visitation will begin at 1 p.m. Monday, December 30, with a Rite of Christian Burial following at 2 p.m. at the Hanes Lineberry Funeral Home Sedgefield Chapel, 6000 W. Gate City Blvd., Greensboro, NC 27407.
