A funeral service will be held at 11:30 am Monday, February 20, 2012 at St. Francis Episcopal Church, 3506 Lawndale Ave, Greensboro, NC 27408. Burial will follow in the Bethlehem United Methodist Church Cemetery, 6103 Appomattox Rd., Climax NC. The family will receive friends from 5:30 until 7:00 pm Sunday at St. Francis church.
Martha was born in Climax the daughter of the late William Paul and Mary Ethel Kivett Coble. She graduated in 1948 from Pleasant Garden High School and later from High Point College School of Nursing. She later received a BS in nursing from A&T University. Her nursing career spanned over 50 years starting with The National Children’s Hospital in Washington, DC, then to Wesley Long Hospital in the Obstetrics Dept. She then continued her career in the OBGYN practice of Dr. William Reed Wood and then Moses Cone Memorial Hospital Emergency Department, 3rd shift charge nurse. Martha also volunteered at the American Red Cross where she taught CPR and also at HealthServe as a nurse. She was an active member of the Emergency Nursing Association. She later retired because of health conditions.
Martha was preceded in death by her husband Denzel Clarence Russell and her second husband Dr. William Reed Wood; and brothers, Billy, Clyde, Howard and Philip Coble.
She is survived by her son, Stephen Clarence Russell; daughter, Julia Reed Wood; grandsons, Christopher Kemp, Eric Russell and Bradley Russell; sister, Louise Coble Bowman; step-sons, William Reed “Chip” Wood Jr., George Roland “Tex” Wood, and David Michael “Mike” Wood; and step-daughter, Sarah Josephine” Sarah Jo” Wood.
