Margaret Gore Swanson, 90, of Greensboro went to be with her Lord and Savior on Wednesday, May 15, 2024. She was born on July 16, 1933 in Roanoke County, VA to H.C. Gore and Ethel Taylor Gore. Margaret graduated from Andrew Lewis High School in Salem, VA in 1951 and then received her Associates in Arts degree from Bluefield College in 1953. After Bluefield College, she attended and graduated from the University of Richmond in 1955, where she met her husband, John F. Swanson who attended and graduated on the same night.
Following graduation, Margaret worked as an Education Director at Temple Baptist Church in Wilmington, NC from July 1955 to July 1956. She then married John F. (Jack) Swanson on September 1, 1956. Jack was already in the USAF and during their first 3 ½ years of marriage, they lived in College Station, TX, Dover, DE and St. John’s, Newfoundland due to Jack’s USAF assignments. While in Newfoundland, Margaret taught seventh grade math at the school on the air force base. In 1960, the family moved to North Carolina where they lived in Raleigh for two years. In 1962, they moved to Winston-Salem and then in 1970 they moved to Greensboro where they currently live.
Margaret and her husband have been active members in a local Baptist church everywhere they have lived. When they moved to Greensboro in 1970, they became members of First Baptist Church of Greensboro. They both sang in the church choirs beginning with their college years until a few years ago. Margaret helped teach in the fourth grade Sunday School Class for many years. She was also active in WMU activities and served in leadership positions. She was active with the Greensboro Council of Garden Clubs.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her son, Thomas F. Swanson; siblings, Lois Francisco (Ozzie); Herschel Gore, Jr.; June Whitlow (Leo); William Gore (Lou); and sister-in-law Norma Gore.
Margaret is survived by her husband Jack Swanson; son, Timothy (Anne); granddaughters, Claire Anderson (Patrick) and Martha Rooney (J.P.); three great granddaughters, Daisy, Gemma and Millie; brother, James L. Gore; and sister-in-law, Betty Gore.
A funeral service will be held at 11 am on Tuesday, May 21, 2024 at First Baptist Church with Rev. Alan Sherouse officiating. The family will receive friends following the service in the Atrium.
