Margaret Dowdy Smith of Greensboro, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, May 12, 2021 at the age of 97.
Margaret lived a long and healthy life until recent months when her health began to decline. She was born in Greensboro, NC to parents Julia Elizabeth Sutton and William Lexie Brande on September 5, 1923 and was the fourth of ten children. She married Wade Hampton Dowdy of Greensboro in May, 1943, who preceded her in death May of 1976. In September of 1983, she married Jack Pershing Smith of Greensboro, who preceded her in death in 1992. Margaret was preceded in death by brothers, Louie Brande, Robert Brande, Clarence Brande, Carl Brande and Ralph Brande and sisters, Mary Wooten, Helen Perry and Betty Taylor.
She was a member of Lawndale Baptist Church in Greensboro.
Margaret is survived by her son Richard Paige Dowdy (wife Christine) of Jamestown, NC, (grandchildren, Kristen Dowdy Craver, Matthew Bryan Dowdy, and Erik Hampton Dowdy) and daughter, Carol Dowdy Goforth of Lexington, NC, (grandchildren Heather G. Sizemore, April G. Smith, and Travis C. Goforth), and one brother, Charles “Red” Brande of Greensboro, NC.
She was proud to have been blessed with twelve great grandchildren. She had an enormous adoration and love for both her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She spent many happy years attending and cheering them on at sporting events, school functions, graduations, weddings, baby showers, and most recently, was eagerly anticipating the upcoming birth of her thirteenth great grandchild.
Margaret was both a beloved and respected matriarch and role model to her family, and a pillar of strength, and grace. Her faith was paramount in her life and foundational in her relationships with others. She leaves behind a family who adored her, and were inspired by her beautiful example of how to live life to the fullest.
Visitation will be Saturday, May 15th from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Hanes Lineberry Funeral Home at 515 N. Elm Street, Greensboro NC and a service of life Sunday, May 16th from 1:30-2:30 p.m. in the chapel at Hanes Lineberry. Burial will be 3:00 p.m. at Lake View Memorial Park, Greensboro.
