Marcia Alice Maury (Marcy), age 70, of Greensboro, North Carolina, passed away on Friday, January 6, 2023, in Moses Cone Hospital. She died suddenly from a cerebral hemorrhage resulting from an aneurysm.
Marcy was born on December 10, 1952, in Wilmington, Delaware. Her father, Lucien Garnett Maury, and her mother, Wilma Jean Hurt Maury, had settled in Wilmington, Delaware, but after retirement, inspired by Marcy, moved to Greensboro where they lived in the Well-Spring Retirement Community for several years before predeceasing Marcy. She is survived by two sisters, Deborah Maury (another Marcy-inspired Greensboro transplant) and husband Michael Curtis; and Wendy Maury and husband Michael Bergman of Coralville, Iowa. She is survived by her husband John Paul Roy, whom she met in Greensboro nearly 50 years ago, with family remaining here ever since. Marcy is also survived by son Evan Roy, with grandchildren Addie Roy and Benjamin Roy; son Brian Roy and wife Katie, with grandchildren Harry Roy and Otis Roy; and extended family.
Marcy attended Elkton High School in Elkton, Maryland, moving to Greensboro to attend Guilford College from which she graduated and remained active in various alumni and arts roles. She worked as an interpreter for the deaf, continuing throughout her life to serve and enjoy Greensboro’s deaf community. She later earned a Master’s Degree at UNC-G, subsequently working in administrative positions for Burlington Mental Health Center, Baptist Hospital Medical School, and Guilford County Partnership for Children.
Marcy was a sparkling and uplifting force in all of the many groups whose lives she touched. Marcy was an accomplished artist, sculptor, and potter. Among her notable activities and groups were her family, Quaker faith, her art, recreational or competitive bridge, cruises and travel, Guilford College arts and alumni, assistance to Somali families, deaf interpreting, many animals (including the famous Mortise the tortoise), and general do-gooding to all she encountered. It was her common experience to take much time to cross a room as she had smiles and conversation for all she encountered. Her positive impact on all is reflected in the large outpouring of heartfelt testimonials on social media.
Marcy was a devoted and engaged grandmother to her four grandchildren, Addie, Benji, Harry and Otis, for whom she was always ready to play games, read with or keep them overnight. Marcy traveled extensively to participate in bridge tournaments, earning sufficient points to become a Bronze Life Master. She was active with the Guilford College Alumni Association, for which she earned the Charles C. Hendricks ‘40 Award. For over 25 years she was also an active teacher of Sunday school at New Garden Friends.
The family would like to thank the Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital for its professional and caring service during Marcy’s unexpected and sudden illness.
A celebration-of-life service will be held on Wednesday, January 11, at 4:00 pm at Dana Auditorium of Guilford College, 710 Levi Coffin Dr., Greensboro NC. A reception will follow at the college.
