Mabel was born on a farm in Stokesdale, NC to the late Julius and Minnie Neal on December 30th, 1938.
She was a graduate of High Point College, earning degrees in History and Religion. She held several jobs including Dean of Women at Oak Ridge Academy, where she taught history and coached girls' basketball. She also taught at Guilford Technical College. She will be remembered as an independent, resourceful, and hard working woman. She enjoyed cooking, working in her house and yard, and was a master gardener. She described her life as bountiful and enjoyed life as a whole.
Mabel was preceded in death by her husband Joseph Lira, her daughter Paula Vaughn, and her granddaughter Meredith Vaughn. She was also preceded by her brothers John, Carl, Bill, and Don Neal and her sisters Linda Chandler and Mary Osborne.
Mabel is survived by her sons Ray Vaughn (Tamra) and Sheldon Vaughn (Sandy), her grandsons Bryan, Matthew, and Michael Vaughn, her granddaughter Madison Vaughn Holden, and her great-grandson Samuel Vaughn.
A graveside service will be held at 1:00 pm on Friday, October 27th at Salisbury National Cemetery, Salisbury, NC.
