Mabel McMillan, 107 years of age, passed away on Saturday, June 24, 2023 at Beacon Place Hospice in Greensboro, North Carolina. Ms. Mabel resided at 1505 Martin Luther King Jr. Drive in Greensboro for about 50 years. Ms. Mabel was born on March 21, 1916 in Duplin County, Rose Hill, North Carolina to the late Morris Cornelius McMillan and Virginia Iola Teachey. Ms. Mabel had four sisters and four brothers, all of who preceded her in death. Her sisters were: Lillian Gertrude “Sister” McMillan Lofton, Mary E. “Hun” McMillan Howard, Beedie Jane “Sis” McMillan Carlton, Ethel Mae “Lurt” McMillan Thompson, William Edward McMillan, Joe Nathan McMillan, Levi McMillan and the youngest boy who died very early in life from pneumonia.
Ms. Mabel’s parents acquired a small farm on which she learned family values – how to work, how to economize and how to be successful. The Great Depression interrupted her formal education, but she continued her education informally. She learned to cook, sew, garden, crochet, knit, yard management, how to manage livestock and how to keep bees.
While in Raleigh, she worked as the cook for the Tau Kappa Epsilon Fraternity at NC State University. She also had an extensive career as a nurse’s aide at hospitals in Randolph County, North Carolina and Upstate New York (Harlem Valley Psychiatric Center). In more recent years, her entrepreneurial nature was kindled as she sold plants and thrift goods at the Greensboro flea market with her youngest daughter Joyce. Ms. Mabel enjoyed gardening, canning, baking and watching classic Hollywood films. She was a lover of a nature and strongly believed in prayer, physical fitness and remaining active.
On Christmas Day, 1936, Ms. Mabel married Adrian Oliver McCullom, Sr. in Duplin County, North Carolina. Four children were born to this union: Greta Lois, Joyce Ann, Adrian Oliver, Jr and James Edward. Greta Lois Hawthorne and Adrian Oliver McCullom, Jr produced seven grandchildren. Four of the grandchildren produced eighteen great grandchildren. She has one great, great granddaughter at the time of death.
Ms. Mabel enjoyed the love and attention she received from a host of nieces, nephews, friends and cousins. Her memorial service will take place at Advantage Funerals and Cremation-Greensboro, 1900 Vanstory St., Greensboro, NC 27403 on Friday, July 14th at 12pm.
I have fought the good fight. I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.
