Lorena Boyd Mittelstadt, 98, passed away Tuesday, October 24, 2023, at her residence. A graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, November 1, at Green Hill Cemetery, 901 Wharton Street, Greensboro.
Lorena, the oldest of six children, was born February 8, 1925, in Spray NC, to the late Elmer Edward and Ruth Harris Boyd. She proudly served our country while in the United States Navy during World War II. Lorena was a member of the WAVES and a Charter Member of the Women’s Memorial in Washington, DC. Lorena was a proud member of the United Daughters of the Confederacy who formally recognized her with the Cross of Military Service.
She was a strong advocate of education, having received her B.A. from Elon College and M.A. of Education from UNC-Greensboro. Lorena taught at the former Rankin and Guilford High Schools.
Lorena loved to travel and considered travel to be part of one’s education. She visited 44 states and two countries before retiring her traveling shoes at age 89.
Lorena’s highest priority was her family and she was dedicated to and loved by them all.
In addition to her parents, Mrs. Mittelstadt was preceded in death by her husband, Billy Oliver Mittelstadt, Sr.; brothers, Howard Boyd, Charles Boyd; sisters, Charlotte Brower and Patsy Hoppa. She is survived by her children, Billy Mittelstadt, Jr., Ruthann Mittelstadt, Catherine Martin (Lyn), Helen Lee Mittelstadt; sister, Kay Isley; grandchildren, Charlotte B. DeMolay (Russ), David M. Walker (Christie), Jason M. Walker, Christopher K. Walker, Mark R. Walker (Beth), Matthew A. Martin (Morgan), Jacob A. Martin (Amanda), Robert W. Mittelstadt (Mara); great grandchildren, Jessica Hart (Alex), Bodhi DeMolay (Monica), Sophia DeMolay, Julia Walker, Grace Walker, Lorena Walker, Frank Walker, Chloe Walker, Landon Martin, Kyndal Martin, Aubrey Martin, Rowen George; great-great grandson, Grayson Hart.
