Funeral services will be held at 1:00 pm Wednesday, April 11, 2012 at Friendly Avenue Baptist Church, with Dr. Pat Cronin officiating. Burial will follow at Greenhill Cemetery.
Born November 14, 1921, to the late Bernard and Alma Calhoun, Lois was a life-long resident of Greensboro, and graduated from Greensboro Senior High School. She retired from the Guilford County School System after many years as an administrative assistant, having worked at both Lindley Junior High and Kiser Junior High Schools. Lois was a life-long dedicated member of Friendly Avenue Baptist Church. She was very active in the church, participating regularly in all aspects of church life. Her greatest passion was singing in the church choir with her late husband, Alex. Lois was a sweet, kind, and gentle lady, whose selflessness and generosity placed her on a pedestal to her family and friends. She was a totally dedicated wife, especially in sacrificing her own well-being to care for Alex in his final years. Lois was proud and thankful to be able to live independently at the young age of 90. Her youthful appearance belied her years. Even in the face of adversity, she was able to calm the storm. In her mind, there was nothing she could not do for herself. Her inner strength and determination was an inspiration to all. In the end, she had it her own way, now reunited in Heaven with her loved ones. In addition to her parents, Lois was preceded in death by her loving husband of 66 years, Alex Cheek, Sr., grandson, Trey Cheek; sister, Dorothy Lloyd; brothers Charles and Jack Calhoun; and daughter-in-law, Mary Frances Cheek.
Those left to cherish her memory include her son, Alex Cheek, Jr., and wife Carol of Raleigh; daughter, Susan Johnson and husband Joe of Charlotte; granddaughter, Patricia Brantley and husband Vance of Raleigh; grandson, Rob Reynolds and wife Ginger of Wilmington; and granddaughter-in-law, Caroline Cheek-Hill, (widow of Trey Cheek), and her husband Martin of Raleigh; and great-grandchildren, Jacob, Charlotte, Hannah, Jackson, Preston, Campbell, Witt, and Smith.
The family will receive friends from 12:00 until 12:45 at the church, forty-five minutes prior to the service.
Memorial contributions may be made to Friendly Avenue Baptist Church, c/o The Music Ministry Fund, 4800 West Friendly Ave., Greensboro, NC 27410.
