Katie Pickard Kirkman

Katie J. Pickard Kirkman, 92, passed away on March 13, 2016. A funeral service to celebrate her life will be at 11 AM, Thursday, March 17 at Hanes-Lineberry N. Elm chapel with Dr. Don Clement officiating. Interment will follow in Forest Lawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends beginning at 9:30 AM prior to the service.

Katie was a native of Greensboro, one of three children of her late parents, Lawrence and Lucy Amos Pickard. She lived most of her life in the house her father built where so many happy memories have been created with her husband, William “Bill” Kirkman, and their family. She and Bill were childhood friends, married in 1946 and celebrated a lovely marriage for 34 years until his death in 1972. Katie was employed with Sears Catalogue Center for 18 years before retiring in 1986. Her loyalty to her family was enduring through four generations and everyone knew they could talk freely and easily with her and she would respond with loving care and sweetness. She was an extremely talented baker, cakes being her specialty, loved the beach with her family and enjoyed reading inspirational stories. She had a mischievous spirit which really came to life when she was with her precious grandchildren. Her faith in God was exemplified and celebrated in good times and trials and she learned of Jesus’ love for her during her life time membership at Palm Street Christian Church where she was a member of the Ladies’ Fellowship. Her love for her family and God were her strength to the end.

She will be remembered by her children, Kathy Lane and David (Edie) Kirkman; grandchildren, Toni Mazzatenta (Mark), Kristy Wilson (Tish Jones) and Bill Wilson all of Greensboro; four great grandchildren, Andrew, Carolyn, Shawna, and Ashley; and brother, Jack Pickard all of Greensboro. In addition to her parents and husband she is preceded in death by a brother, Talmadge Pickard.
