Our wonderful mother and precious grandmother rejoined our father and was greeted by her Savior, Jesus Christ on October 20, 2018. Karen Wood Carter was 69. A service to celebrate her life will be at 2 PM, Friday, October 26 at Friendly Avenue Baptist Church, officiated by Dr. Daniel Dickard. The family will receive friends beginning at 1PM prior to the service.
Karen was the only child of the late J.D. and Clover Brown Wood. She was born in Albuquerque, NM and educated in Knoxville, TN where she graduated from Central High School and continued her education at University of Tennessee College of Nursing. While in college she met Robert Hyman Carter, Jr. and married in 1970 then moved to Greensboro in 1971. They were married for 47 years until Bob’s passing on December 20, 2017.
Karen had a steadfast faith in Christ and no doubt it was her trust in him which strengthened her during her battle with breast cancer. She was an involved member at Friendly Avenue Baptist Church where she participated in the voice and hand bell choirs, as well as the Women’s Missionary Union and Girls in Action. Her life revolved around her church and family. She also had a heart for caring for others which was demonstrated in her nursing career of forty years, thirty of which at Moses Cone Hospital primarily in the Coronary Care Unit. She was held in high esteem by her co-workers for her abundant knowledge of nursing and patient care and was kind and humble when others asked for her training and guidance.
She was a devoted and supportive mother involved in her children’s activities, music development, education and adult lives and absolutely adored her four grandchildren. The beach was her favorite relaxation destination and during the holidays, if her house was full, her heart was too. Karen’s love language was gift giving and she generously showed love to her friends and family. It was her way of communicating love to those special to her.
Memories of Karen will be cherished by her children and their spouses, Pastor Jason and Melanie Carter of Gurnee, IL and Stephanie and Peter Bradley of Greensboro; and grandchildren, Isaiah, Sophia, Jonah and Ella; and numerous cousins.
