A funeral service will be held Tuesday, December 12, 2023, 11:00 a.m., at Hanes-Lineberry N. Elm Chapel. Burial will follow at Forest Lawn Cemetery.
John was born August 28, 1972 in Winfield, IL, the son of the late John Henry Scheffer, Jr. and Deborah Barr Scheffer, (now Deborah Hewett).
John was a graduate of Saint Pius X Catholic School as well as Grimsley High School. He was employed for many years as manager of an auto body shop. In his younger years of employment, he worked for his family’s window cleaning business. Speed skating, and basketball were some of his greatest hobbies and he was said to have one ugly jump shot! In his later less mobile years, watching football became a serious passion.
John had a tremendous love for fishing and enjoyed going camping. If a fish broke his line, he would restring and keep going until he succeeded. This kind of determination was always his greatest asset. If his mind was made up about something, the word “can’t” was rarely a part of his vocabulary. Perseverance and resilience, regardless of the circumstance, proved to be his most beautiful characteristic. His proudest accomplishment here on earth was his daughter.
In addition to his father, John was preceded in death by his grandparents, John Henry Scheffer Sr. and wife Rita; Robert Howard Barr and wife Eva Verneal; many beloved aunts and uncles; and a precious great nephew.
Those left to cherish his memory are his daughter, Hayleigh Scheffer of Greensboro; mother, Deborah Hewett (James) of Germanton; sisters, Jennifer Farmer (Todd Richardson) of Greensboro and Kristen Krecek (Dan) of High Point; brother, Benjamin Scheffer (Elia) of Greensboro; nieces and nephews, Noelle Cervantes, Jamie and Codi Farmer, Ethan and Eva Krecek, Carolina Gonzalez, and Ivan Juarez Gonzalez.
Family and friends will be received Monday, December 11, 2023, from 6:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m., at the funeral home.
The family asks with gratitude that memorials in John’s name be made to The North Carolina Wildlife Federation, http://www.ncwf.org/, or your favorite animal charity in his honor.
