John Lloyd Rendall III passed away on December 18, 2023. Born on March 23, 1947, as the son of John & Ruth Rendall in St. Paul, Minnesota. He had a blessed midwestern childhood excelling at school and on the football field at the St. Paul Academy.
Throughout his life, he chose his activities with care and invested himself fully in his pursuits. He was blessed with a marriage of 55 years to his St. Paul sweetheart, Kathleen Shiely, and went on to experience a lifelong partnership built on love, support, and shared adventures. He attended Harvard University where he became a life-long Boston Celtics fan and attended Duke University for his MD, where he also became a Duke fan.
He loved Smith Mountain Lake, Virginia, and would frequently soak in one last boat ride to get the most from each vacation. His time as a fisherman, often on that lake, was with great effort and comedy … and an occasional fish.
John dedicated over 30 years of his life to the practice of medicine at the Sports Medicine and Orthopedic Center (SM&OC) in Greensboro. While successful, he seldom bragged about his accomplishments and did not endorse that behavior in others. His humility was one of his greatest gifts as was his life-long mission to fix what he could in others to help them heal. His focus was on leaving the world a better place than he found it.
He is survived by his wife, Kathleen Rendall, sister, Deborah Rendall, brother, Richard Rendall, his five children, Carolyn, Dana, Allison, John & Chris, and his ten grandchildren, with whom he enjoyed playing cards with when they visited. Each of us is better for having known him. We cherished his wit, wisdom and grace. He will be deeply missed.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (https://givenow.lls.org/give/342076/?ds_rl=1278572&gad_source=1&ds_rl=1278572&gclsrc=aw.ds#!/donation/checkout) in honor of John’s lifelong dedication to healing and compassion.
A celebration of John’s remarkable life will be held privately with his family in Iowa at a later date. Please join us in commemorating a life well-lived, a legacy that will endure through the ages. As John would say in summary of his life, VENI, VIDI, VICI. We are eternally grateful to have shared years of our lives with such a man.
