John Brantley McAdoo, Jr. was called to his rest on January 1, 2021. He passed away peacefully in his sleep at home, with Judy, his wife of 61 years, at his side. He was the son of Miriam Rankin McAdoo and John Brantley McAdoo, Sr. of Greensboro, born November 1, 1935.
He is survived by his spouse, Judith Eason McAdoo of the home, and children John Brantley McAdoo III of Atlanta, grandchildren John Brantley McAdoo IV of Charlotte and Harrison Rankin McAdoo of Atlanta; his daughter, Leigh Carol McAdoo Kempf of Chapel Hill and husband William L. Kempf III, grandchildren Alexandrea (Alleigh) Leigh Kempf and Judith Kathleen (Judy Kate) Kempf; and his brother Halstead Wheeler McAdoo and wife Karen Lloyd McAdoo of Greensboro. His grandchildren liked to call him “Big B.”
He graduated from the University of Texas, Austin, where he met his future wife Judy Eason and also served in the US Army National Guard. He returned to Greensboro to work in the family tire business with his father and brother. His professional sales demeanor and remarkable technical abilities led him to be greatly appreciated by his many customers over the years. Even in “retirement”, he was sought out by valued clients to support their technical needs.
Brantley enjoyed time spent with the Summit Rotary Club and international exchange program. He loved playing tennis with friends and groups, even to the end of his life. He valued time spent outdoors and took many hunting and fishing trips with close friends. He loved pets and animals of all kinds, even a “secret” pet mouse named Beady.
His strong intellect, curiosity, and interest in mechanical and electrical issues kept him busy with projects his entire life. He became a licensed HAM radio operator at the age of thirteen and enjoyed communicating with worldwide friends over the airwaves.
He especially loved attending the Young Men’s Bible Study at First Presbyterian Church, making friends, and learning Scripture. He tried to take a lesson from every Sunday, and share it with family and friends.
Brantley McAdoo was a caring, curious man with an incredible sense of humor. He could make friends with anyone he met, usually through a joke, a smile, and a laugh. He had friends from every walk of life, from his coffee buddies to his doctor and nurses. He will be dearly missed by all. His friends, as well as his family, are grateful for his presence, and his memory will be a blessing to us all.
A graveside service will be held on Saturday January 9th at 2:00 PM at Green Hill Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests those interested make donations to Cone Health Cancer Center, 2400 W. Friendly Ave., Greensboro, NC 27403, or First Presbyterian Church, 617 N. Elm St, Greensboro, NC 27401.
