John A. Harmon went home to be with his Savior on November 16, 2022, at the age of 63. He is survived by his loving husband Ishmael D Whitfield-Harmon of Danville, VA. John was born in Chicago, IL and was predeceased by his parents John H Harmon Jr. and Nancy M Harmon (nee Spalding). John was also the big brother of Christine Retel (Paul) of Chesapeake, VA, Joan Rodriguez (Roger) of Winfield, IL, and Jim Harmon (Lurann) of Downers Grove, IL. He is also survived by nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and many cousins across the country.
Raised in Glen Ellyn, IL where he attended Glenbard West High School and was a member of Village Green Baptist Church, John enjoyed singing in the church choir and being part of the high school Spanish Club that he quickly became president of. After graduating in 1977 John joined the Army and proudly served as a ‘64C10 Motor Transport Operator’ in Germany until 1983, earning commendations in mechanics, hand grenades, and as a rifle marksman. After the Army John moved to North Carolina where he met Ishmael.
John and Ishmael moved to Virginia in January 2000 and spent 14 happy years together before marrying April 18, 2015. They enjoyed 23 years together living in Greensboro, North Carolina then Danville, Virginia where they established their IT Service and Computer Care business: HW Computer Care. At home John enjoyed spending time with friends, reading any good mystery he could get his hands on and spoiling their beloved dog, Sadie Mae. What he loved most was just staying home with Ishmael.
A Memorial Service celebrating John’s life will be held at 10:00 am, Saturday, January 7, 2023, at Congregational United Church of Christ; 400 West Radiance Drive, Greensboro, North Carolina.
