A Service of Remembrance will be held Saturday, July 22, 11:00 a.m. at First Baptist Church, where John was a member for over 50 years.
John was born June 14, 1940 in Winston-Salem, the son of Arley and Eloise Vaughan Curlee. He received his undergraduate degree from NC State and postgraduate degree from UNC Chapel Hill. During a career spanning well over four decades, John was employed as an engineer by Vicks-Proctor & Gamble, ABCO Automation and ConvaTec, specializing in project management. He will be remembered by the many he touched as a gentle, kind soul: dependable, caring, and full of life. Despite declining health, his easy, generous laugh remained, as did his love of a spontaneous chat with a friend or stranger. He loved the outdoors, photography, music, and to work with his hands; animals of all kinds were drawn to his sweet spirit.
Those left to treasure his memory include his cherished wife of 49 years, Ellen Curlee, to whom he was deeply attuned; son, Matt Curlee and his partner Aparna Das of Rochester, NY; brother, Wilson Curlee and wife Jenni of Blackfoot, ID; and his grandson, James Curlee.
The family asks with gratitude that memorials in John’s name be made to the Western Carolina Chapter Alzheimer’s Association, 4600 Park Rd., Ste 250, Charlotte, NC 28209 or to First Baptist Church, 1000 W. Friendly Ave., Greensboro, NC 27401.
