He is survived by the love of his life, his wife of 69 years; Martha Louise Nunn Barham, his daughters; Pam Barham Barham (Phil), Sherry Barham Strader, Kandie Barham Brogdon (Clay); son, Joel Jaymie Barham (Sherri); 11 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents; John Grady Barham and Nancy Eliza Elizabeth Tilley Barham; his sisters, Lois Barham Foster (Hugh), Rachel Barham Bovender (Paul), Eva Barham Dixon (Jim); brother, Charles Wesley Barham (Benny); and son-in-law, Charles (Andy) Strader.
John spent his career as a Greensboro Police Officer for 30 years serving in patrol, traffic, Jailor, SWAT Team and the Tactical Division. He was known for his ability to catch criminals on the run. He was a sportsman and loved the game of baseball; he was a pitcher for the Police Team early in his career. He also served in the United States Army for 2 years during the Korean War. John was a Christian who never passed up the opportunity to tell others about the saving grace of Jesus. Many accepted Christ through his witness. He enjoyed playing sports with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren until he was 90 years old. At 82 years of age, he outran all the 10-year-olds on the baseball team two of which were his own grandsons. He had an uncanny ability to tell stories that held the attention of everyone in the room. Often, he was requested to repeat the same story because it was so interesting and funny. He loved growing his garden every year and sharing his abundant crop with the family and his neighbors. He will be greatly missed by his family but it is a comfort to know that he is in the arms of Jesus.
