Funeral services will be held at 1:00 pm on Monday, September 27, 2021 at Hanes-Lineberry Sedgefield Chapel, 6000 W. Gate City Blvd., in Greensboro. Jerry will be laid to rest immediately following the funeral in Guilford Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 10:00 am until 1:00 pm at the funeral home, prior to the funeral services and other times at Jerry and Toni’s home.
Born in Guilford County on August 11, 1951 to the late Edward Columbus Thornburg and Ruby Leona Copple Sparks, Jerry was of the Baptist faith. He worked as an HVAC installer for over 50 years and retired from Eanes Heating and Air. Jerry loved working on cars however, he would and could work on absolutely anything and everything but, above all, he just really enjoyed helping others. He was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle, cousin and friend who was loved by many and will be missed by all who knew him. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers, E.C. Thornburg, Homer Ray Thornburg, and his twin brother, Gary Thornburg; a sister-in-law, Brenda Thornburg; and a brother-in-law, Wayne Jones “Captain”.
Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of 44 years, Toni LaPrade Thornburg of the home; Daughter, Tanya A. Smith of Randleman and son-in-law, Paul Smith of Randleman; son, David Thornburg (Pam) of Pleasant Garden; sister, Joyce Isley (Floyd); sisters-in-law, Wanda Jones, Inez Thornburg, Evelyn “Cookie” Thornburg; grandchildren, Kirstin Smith-Oxendine (Victor), Lindsey Thornburg, Dalen Smith and Makinley Smith; great-grandson, Rhett Grayson Oxendine; a host of nieces and nephews, along with many friends and extended family; and his beloved four-legged baby, “Hailey Belle”.
