Jean was born on July 8, 1938 to the late William Albert and Mary Evelyn Baucom Funderburk in Union County, NC. A graduate of Wingate College (AA), and Wake Forest (BA), and UNC-G (MA), she spent several years as a Director of Christian Education in Enfield, NC, and at College Park Church in Greensboro. After her children were born, she was a stay-at-home mom for a few years and then taught elementary school until retirement.
Jean was a loving and caring daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend. She was happiest entertaining her family, especially her grandchildren. She was their biggest fan at their games and performances. She was a strong supporter of her three children, proud of their accomplishments and available for their needs.
She was a devout member of First Baptist Church where she served as a deacon and Sunday School teacher and sat on many committees. Her faith was made evident in her service to a women’s shelter and, most recently, her leadership in a grief support group at her church.
Besides her active involvement with her church, she was also a loved member of a birthday group, a book club, and her neighborhood. She enjoyed attending the symphony with her friends and going on morning walks with friends Kay Hensley and Ann Powell.
Jean was preceded in death by her devoted husband, David Carr Stanfield and two brothers, William Funderburk (Phyllis) and Cullie Funderburk. She is survived by her three children and their spouses, Paul Stanfield (Sandi) of Greensboro, Mary S. Bonheimer (David) of Charlotte, and Bill Stanfield (Evelyn Oliveira) of North Charleston, SC; seven grandchildren, Ashley, Megan, and Jake Stanfield, Bud and Will Bonheimer, and Agegnu and Kibru Stanfield; her sister Becky Brown of Winston-Salem and her brother Smiley Funderburk (Brenda) of Summerfield.
A memorial service will be held January 13 at First Baptist Church Greensboro at 1:00 with visitation following. Rev. Alan Sherouse will be officiating. Inurnment in the columbarium at the church will be private.
