Janice Mitchell Smith

Greensboro- Janice Sue Mitchell Smith, 67, passed away February 18, 2015 surrounded by her family. She is now at peace in Heaven. Janice fought valiantly for over eleven years in a battle against lung cancer. A celebration of her life will be 2 PM, Saturday, February 21, 2015 at Trinity Covenant Church, 5200 West Friendly Avenue, Greensboro, NC 27410, with Dr. Daryl Bodie officiating. The family will receive friends following the service at the church.

Janice was born on October 24, 1947 in Greensboro, one of four children of Edward and Margaret Mitchell. Janice graduated from Grimsley High School. During her summer job in 1966 she met her future husband, William (Bill) Eugene Smith. They married in 1970 and celebrated 44 wonderful years together.

Janice had a wide circle of friends as she was very active in both the civic and her neighborhood communities. While her children were young she worked at Guilford College Methodist pre-school and later at Guilford and Greensboro Colleges, where she supported many students in residence life and career services. Janice had a love of animals and could often be seen walking her dogs and those of her neighbors. Janice’s faith was extremely important to her and she exhibited that faith through involvement in her church, The Fellowship, and with Greater Greensboro Youth For Christ, an organization she and Bill loved and supported.

Her family will remember her as a loving wife, mother and grandmother. Her love for her family was particularly evident in the way she made the Christmas holiday so special.

Janice is survived by her loving husband, Bill; children, Brad Smith and wife Shannon of Greensboro; and Jennifer Smith and partner Valerie Faulkner of Durham; five grandchildren, Maci, Morgan, Maddie, Bradley, and Mia Smith all of Greensboro; father, Edward Mitchell of Greensboro; sister, Joyce Haney of Rocky Mount and Joan Frase and husband Doug of Akron, OH; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins from both sides of the family. She is preceded in death by her mother, Margaret, brother, Edward Mitchell Jr., and brother-in-law, Bill Haney.
