Sonny was born on Johnson Street in High Point on September 15, 1933, a son of Joseph Luther Griffin and Mary Ella Sechrest Griffin.
He graduated from Jamestown High School where he was a bus driver. Sonny was proud to serve his country as a member of the U.S. Army towards the end of the Korean War and was stationed in Germany. He returned home where he worked for Bell Telephone, later A.T.&T., then Lucent Technology until retiring. Just before retiring Sonny was installing communication systems at military bases for NATO. He loved NASCAR and Westerns.
He was married for 64 years to Mary Alice Elliott Griffin who preceded him in death. He was also preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Madge G. Cook, Louise G. Thompson, Billie G. Robinson, Nancy G. Harris and brothers, Ervin Griffin, Joseph “Jay” Luther Griffin, Jr. and William “Bud” Griffin.
Most of all Sonny loved his family. Left behind to cherish his memory are daughters, Teresa Griffin Penninger and husband Nelson of Lexington, Pamela Griffin Myers of Oak Island; granddaughter, Celeste Williams and husband Joshua of Lexington; his sister, Betty Griffin Yow of High Point and many friends, nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday April 23, 2024 at Guilford Memorial Park. The family will visit with friends following the service.
