James “Jim” Steven Brown, III, a resident of Greensboro passed away on Saturday October 30, 2021 at Wesley Long Hospital. He was born April 22, 1942 in Charleston, SC the son of the late Dr. James Steven Brown Jr. and Dorothy Margaret Beaver Brown.
Jim attended Furman University and later Syracuse University. A veteran of the US Air Force, Jim served during the Vietnam era. After his honorable discharge, he worked in the hospitality industry for many years. For 14 years he and his wife Becky worked at Thornwell Home for Children in Clinton, SC where they were house parents and mentors to many young people. Jim and Becky retired in 2010 and moved to Greensboro, NC to be closer to family. He was a member of Jamestown Presbyterian Church where he was a Stephen Minister, a worship leader, and served on various committees including the Worship and Pastor Nominating Committees. Jim had a love of animals which led him to volunteer at the Greensboro Science Center for 8 years.
He is survived by his wife of over 50 years, Rebecca “Becky” White Brown; his son, Chris Brown and his wife Shelia of Greenwood, SC; his daughter, Donna Brown Schultz and her husband Rich of Syracuse, NY; his son, Scott Brown and his wife Margaret of Deerfield, MA; his sister, Jane Brown Conklin of Hudson, FL; his grandchildren, Sydney and Brantlee Brown, Makenna and Haven Schultz, Noah, Zac, and Henry Brown; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
A service to celebrate Jim’s life will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, November 6, at Jamestown Presbyterian Church, Jamestown, NC, conducted by the Reverend Dr. Jay Smith. The family will receive friends following the service in the church fellowship hall.
