GREENSBORO — Herman Winfree, age 90, went home to be with the Lord on January 14. He was born in rural Guilford County, NC and is survived by his wife, Erline, to whom he was married for 65 years. Herman is also survived by his daughter, Tyra, her husband William Martin of Oak Ridge, his daughter, Beverly, her husband John Banaszak of Greensboro, his son, Charles Herman and daughter-in-law, Karen Richter, of Greensboro, and son, John Charles of Cornelius, NC; sisters, Joy Middleton of Creedmoor, Mary Sue Hawkins, Viola Smith, and Shirley Sharpe all of Greensboro; 11 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Dot Winfree and brother-in-law, J. C. Jones; and special friend and wonderful caregiver, Pam Overby. He joins his parents, Jessie and Charlie Winfree; brothers, Lonnie, James, and Houston; and sisters, Eazora Cummings, Mattie Belle Washburn, Carolyn Jones, and Louise Bailey.
Herman was a WWII veteran who served in the Army Air Corp in the Pacific theater. He was proud of his service and loved his country. After serving his country, he used the GI Bill to receive an education. He received a degree in history from High Point College, and attended law school in Chapel Hill and Asheville. He practiced law in Greensboro for 52 years, retiring at the age of 82. Having grown up on a farm, Herman loved the outdoors and gardening, but loved even more so sharing the fruits of his labor with his friends and family. He was happiest when giving to others, which he did often. Herman was a volunteer fireman for many years and volunteered for Meals on Wheels after his retirement. He never met a stranger. He was an honest man and a devoted husband, father, and friend.
The family will receive friends at 2:00 pm on Thursday, January 17 at First Baptist Church of Summerfield, 2300 Scalesville Road, Summerfield. A graveside service of internment will follow at 3:00 pm. Pastors Deryl Holliday and Jacelyn Jones will officiate. A memorial service will be held at a later date.
