January 6, 1940 – March 25, 2025
With heavy hearts we announce the passing of Harvey Earl McDonald. Harvey passed away peacefully on Tuesday, March 25, 2025, in Greensboro, North Carolina, at the age of 85. Julie, his wife and partner in life over the last eighteen years, stood fast by his side in his final days.
Harvey was born in Shelbyville, Indiana, and following high school he enlisted in the US Marine Corp at Camp Pendleton, CA. A proud Marine, Harvey served his country with honor and carried that same dedication throughout his life. After his service, he received his law degree from Indiana University. He built a successful law practice in Indiana, and he was deeply committed in his service to the American Legion.
After his retirement, Harvey served as Judge Advocate and Parliamentarian for the American Legion, Cone Post 386 in Greensboro, North Carolina. He devoted countless hours volunteering at the American Legion’s Saturday hot dog sales, raising money for local scholarships and other charitable causes. Harvey also served for many years as Judge Advocate for the Marine Corps Detachment 260 in Greensboro.
Harvey found joy in fishing and the great outdoors. For over fifty years in May, Harvey would make his annual pilgrimage to Lake Vermillion, Minnesota with his fishing buddies. Harvey also enjoyed frequent trips to Southport and Oak Island, North Carolina, with Julie, family, and friends.
Harvey was a loving father to his daughter, Tara (Mike Noble), a proud grandfather to Adam Leppert, Elise “Annie” Chandler (Kyle), Andrew Noble, Christian Noble, and Maeve McDonald, and great-grandfather to Logan Jordan, Harrison Jordan, and Hollyn Chandler. Harvey is also survived by his siblings, Janet Coffey, Robert McDonald, and Carolyn Sue Berkemeir. Predeceasing Harvey in death are his beloved daughters Kelly and Heather “Blue,” and his siblings Leona, Richard, and Jim. Later in his life, Harvey became close with Julie’s children, Jason Russell (Rachel) and Jill (David Hinkle), and he was like a grandfather to Lockley Hinkle, Lea Russell, and Shepherd Hinkle.
A celebration of Harvey’s life will be held at 4:00 p.m., Friday, April 11, at Hanes Lineberry Funeral Home in Greensboro. Friends will be received following the service.
