Lt. Col. Harold (Hal) Weis Wells, 91, of Greensboro, passed away peacefully on Monday, August 20, 2012 at The Shannon Gray Rehabilitation & Recovery Center. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend who always looked for the positive things in life. In his later years, Harold enjoyed a renewed faith in God and appreciated all the wonderful things he experienced in life.
Harold was born in Rose Hill, NC and was one of eleven children born to Julian and Daisy Wells. Harold attended college at Wake Forest before heading to Europe for World War II where he served as a cryptologist and helped work on breaking the Enigma code. After the war, he served in the Foreign Service before returning to earn his degree from Wake Forest. He spent most of his career working for the National Security Agency in Ft. Mead, MD as well as serving in the US Army Reserve.
In retirement, Harold enjoyed time spent with his Kiwanis Club friends, rooting for the Deacs, traveling and spending time with his family.
He is survived by his wife, Nancy Wells; daughter, Allyson Little and husband Larry of Summerfield, NC, sons, Doug Wells and wife Pam of Winston Salem, NC, Byron Wells and wife Kerry of Colfax, NC, Brandon Wells and wife Kelly of High Point, NC, and Dwight Wells and wife Alia of Los Angeles. Harold had 12 incredible grandchildren who brought him great joy in his later years: Holly, Ben, Joshua, Jared, Ty, Conley, Liam, Patrick, Evan, Sydney, Ethan, and Ryan. Harold is also survived by two siblings Annie Hadley and Lloyd Wells; as well as his many loving cousins, nieces, nephews and other friends.
There will be a graveside service at Rockfish Presbyterian Church in Wallace, NC on Saturday August 25, 2012 at 9 am for family and friends. Flowers for the service may be sent to the Padgett Funeral Home in Wallace, NC. Padgett Funeral Home will deliver to the graveside.
