George O. Whatley, Sr., 92, passed away on Saturday, July 16, 2011 at Wesley Long Hospital. Funeral services will be held on Monday, July 25, 2:00 pm at Hanes Lineberry Sedgefield Chapel with Reverend Wayne Wright officiating. Burial will military honors will follow at Guilford Memorial Park.
George was born in Helena, GA, the son of William F. and Myrtle Odom Whatley. He served his country during WW II in the US Army. George was awarded a Purple Heart for wounds he received in France in 1944. He worked with Lorillard Tobacco until his retirement. He was also a member of McConnell Road Baptist Church.
Those left to cherish his memory are his son, George O. Whatley Jr., of Liberty, NC; grandsons, Michael Whatley of Greensboro, NC, Alex Whatley, of Liberty, NC, Brent Bailey and wife Lynn of Greensboro, NC; great grandchildren; Mia and Dylan Whatley and Emily Whatley.
The family will receive friends on Sunday evening from 5 to 7 p.m. at Hanes Lineberry Sedgefield Chapel.
