George Daniel Robison, III passed away peacefully on August 28, 2022 at Moses Cone Memorial Hospital after a brief illness He was surrounded by his family to the end. George was born in Paris, Tennessee on February 19, 1934 to George Daniel Robison, Jr and Nelle Cavitt McSwain Robison. His father’s book publishing career moved the family to Glen Ridge, New Jersey when George was in the fifth grade. After graduating from high school, he entered Dartmouth College where he served on the Winter Carnival Committee, was editor of the 1956 Yearbook and a member of Green Key. Following graduation, George worked for RR Donnelley in Chicago until he was drafted into the US Army. He married the love of his life, Katherine (Kitty) Holt in June of 1957 and together they moved to Louisiana for the duration of his military service. After discharge, George and Kitty moved to Atlanta, GA where George received a Masters in Industrial Management from Georgia Tech. While in school, he was recruited by Blue Bell, Inc. which precipitated their move to Greensboro and started a twenty-three year career advancing from the budget office to Treasurer and ultimately Executive Vice President of Finance. During those years, George and Kitty put down enduring roots in the Greensboro community they loved.
In 1985, after Lacy Thornburg was elected Attorney General of North Carolina, George was asked to join Thornburg’s staff as Comptroller of the NC Department of Justice. During his tenure with the Department of Justice, George completed the Government Executives Institute at UNC-CH Kenan-Flagler Business School. George held the position of Comptroller throughout both Thornburg’s terms. He continued his service to the State, lending his financial acumen to the Department of Low Level Radioactive Waste Management, until his retirement.
George was an elder, Sunday School teacher and Youth leader at the First Presbyterian Church. He served on the boards of Junior Achievement, the Greensboro Arts Council, the Greensboro Artist’s League, the Greensboro Opera, the English Speaking Union, and the Community Theater. As a Jaycee, George was Treasurer of the Greater Greensboro Open. He was a Paul Harris Rotarian, member of the Greensboro Rotary Club and charter member of Sherwood Swim and Racquet Club.
During George’s long and active retirement, he continued his volunteer work, adding the role of driver for the Shepherd Center. George enjoyed exercising at the YMCA, as well as the company of his “Dover Boys” lunch group. He and Kitty loved to travel the world, spend time at their beloved Holden Beach, where they were associate members of the Holden Beach Chapel, and, most of all, he enjoyed the company of their four children and their ten grandchildren. His family was the most important thing to him.
George was predeceased by his parents and his three brothers: Horace McSwain Robison, Barton Fancher Robison and James Richard Robison. He is survived by his wife, his four children: Margaret Robison Kantlehner (Robert), Katherine Robison Davey, Anne-Barton Carter (Robert) and G. Daniel Robison, IV, his ten grandchildren: Laura Katherine Davey Klein (Sean), Elizabeth Martin Davey, Marshall Robison Davey, Robert Charles Kantlehner, Jr (Jennifer), Paul Cavitt Kantlehner (Alexa Chickene), Bryson McSwain Carter (EmaLeigh O’Neal), Stirling Holt Carter, Molly-McGill Carter Kibby (Regan), Mary Margaret Robison, Davis Holt Robison and one
great-grandchild, James Francis Klein. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the First Presbyterian Church Outreach Ministries, the Greensboro Symphony Orchestra, the Shepherd’s Center or the community non-profit of your choice. A Service of Memory and Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, October 8 at 11:00 am in the sanctuary of the First Presbyterian Church, live stream will be available.
