George Raymond Pitts, 90, passed away on Saturday, October 17, 2015. He was born on October 14, 1925 in Guilford County, NC, the son of E. E. and Eleanora Edwards Pitts. He was a graduate of Guilford High School and joined the US Navy in September of 1943. He served in the Pacific Theatre until his discharge at Norfolk in May of 1946.
Raymond worked as a ceramic tile setter with Greensboro Marble and Tile Company for 14 years. He then went to work with the US Postal Service where he retired from after 25 years of service. He was a lifetime member of Hickory Grove United Methodist Church where he served as treasurer for 32 years. He also taught Sunday school and served on all the church committees at some time during his life. Raymond loved to fish and work in his garden and spending time with his family. He will be deeply missed.
Raymond was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Eunice and brother, Jack, who was killed in action while serving in the US Marine Corp in the South Pacific in WW II. Surviving are his loving wife of 66 years, Bessie (Bick) Pitts; daughter, Marsha Hayes and husband Eddie of Castle Hayne, NC; grandson, Mason Goslee and wife Meghan of Wilmington, NC; sisters, Dorothy Hall of Jamestown, NC and Mabel Shields of Greensboro, NC and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, 2:00 p.m. at the Hickory Grove United Methodist Church with Rev. Leon Morrow officiating. Burial will follow in the Hickory Grove Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service on Wednesday at the church.
