George Douglas Keith Isbell, affectionately known as “Doug, Douger, and Mr. George” by those who knew and loved him, departed this life for his final resting place on October 25, 2023, at the age of 92.
George was born in Caldwell County (Lenior, NC), on November 22, 1930 to mother, Virginia Isbell and father, Walter Howard Isbell. He was raised in a big loving family with his five brothers and eight sisters.
George Isbell graduated from Gary High School in Gary, WV, where he went on to receive his high school diploma.
George Isbell worked at AMP Inc. in Greensboro, NC for over 20 years and retired in 1997. After his retirement, he managed a gas station for a period of time, and was also employed with Foster Care Services, as a Caregiver until his passing.
George was married to his wife, Vernell Isbell for over 50 years, who he loved and cherished dearly. One of his greatest joys in life was caring for all of his grandchildren, especially his dedicated care to his grandson, Travis Isbell.
George was a loyal, tell-it-like-it-is, “no nonsense", caring, loving and passionate, husband, father, son, brother, cousin, uncle, and friend. He loved fishing and watching NASCAR races.
George was preceded in death by his father, Walter Howard Isbell; mother, Virginia Josephine Largent Isbell; sisters Jacquelyn Norella Isbell Jones and Margaret Christine Isbell; brothers Walter Jeffrey Isbell, James Largent Isbell and Maurice O’Neil Isbell; and granddaughter Crystal Isbell.
He leaves to mourn his wife, Vernell Isbell; daughter, Pamela Isbell; sisters Dorothy Carolyn Isbell Simon, Pamela Econ Isbell Gladman (John), Sheilah Victoria Isbell Harper, Denise Michele Isbell Horton, Kimberly Lynn Isbell Jones (Barr) and Tommee Jo Isbell; brother Michael Isbell; grandchildren Travis Isbell, Alisia Waldon (Derrick), and Jermaine Isbell; great-grandchildren Erin Waldon, Christian Waldon, Dominique Waldon, Addison Tate, Jordan Harrington, Cameron Harrington and Mason Harrington; and a host of his beloved nieces, nephews, and cousins.
The funeral will be held Friday, November 3, 2023 at 1:00 p.m. at the chapel of Advantage Funeral & Cremation Services of Greensboro, 1900 Vanstory Street. Visitation will be from noon until 1:00 p.m. Interment will follow at Lakeview Memorial Park, 3600 N. O'Henry Blvd., Greensboro. There will be a family & friends gathering immediately following the burial at Windsor Recreation Center, 1601 E. Gate City Blvd., Greensboro, NC.
The family would like thank his cancer care team doctors and nurses at both Wesley Long and Duke Hospital, Moses Cone Wound Care Center, Primary care physician at Alpha Medical Care, Dr. Edwin Avbuere, and AuthoraCare Collective Services.
