Garland was a devoted and faithful follower of Jesus Christ. He was a member and Deacon for 60 plus years of Immanuel Baptist Church in Greensboro, where he also served as Treasurer for several years. He helped his parents build the church building as a teenager and spent the rest of his life serving the Lord, the members, and the surrounding community there. He was an active member of the Buildings and Grounds Committee and never stopped his service there; a recent example being he and Barbara repainted the lines in the parking lot by themselves a few months ago.

Beyond his church and professional life, Garland was a dedicated Boy Scout leader, accompanying his son Keith on his journey to becoming an Eagle Scout.
Upon retiring from his 35 years of service as an accountant for the City of Greensboro, he and Barbara decided to embark on a new adventure, traversing the nation over severals trips in their RVs. They explored 49 states, even making the journey to Alaska to visit their son Keith who worked as a rafting guide there for two summers.
He was grateful for the time he was able to spend with Cathy and her family and particularly enjoyed watching his grandsons grow up in Greensboro before attending college.
