He was a man of many great talents and passions, with a heart of gold and a truly infectious smile. He loved to travel. He loved to fly. He loved mentoring others and seeing them succeed. But more than anything, he loved his family.
He lived life to the fullest and filled so many lives along the way.
Frank was born in the Bronx, New York to Frank R. Mascia and Katharyne Jewett Mascia. He graduated from Penn State University and proudly served in the United States Air Force as a First Lieutenant with the Office of Special Investigations. Frank’s illustrious business career then began in Human Resources, working for General Foods, United Airlines, Pickwick Records and Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Maryland. In 1985, he moved his family to Greensboro, North Carolina to be the CEO of the newly created Physicians Health Plan. From a start-up HMO to one of the state’s largest managed care companies, Frank successfully led PHP through its acquisition by United Healthcare of NC, remaining as CEO, and eventually retiring after 20 years in 2005.
After his “retirement,” Frank really got to work. His infamous to-do lists turned to bettering his community, convening his growing family, and pursuing wild adventures and new friendships across the globe. Acting on a deep affection for the nation’s National Parks, he poured countless volunteer hours into two of his personal favorites – the Guilford Courthouse National Military Park and Grand Teton National Park. He found peace in the beauty of nature. Frank also had an enormous sense of civic duty and was a tireless and selfless community leader. He devoted an ever increasing amount of his free time in recent years to his beloved city of Greensboro, serving on numerous volunteer boards and always finding new ways to give back to those around him. He was a long-standing board member and past president of the Cone Health Foundation, an active member of the Rotary Club of Greensboro and a champion of so many other beneficial efforts in the community. He thought of this service an honor – particularly with the Greensboro Police Foundation which he helped create and served as the President.
Frank pursued life and love with vigor. He will be incredibly missed by the many, many people that knew and loved him.
He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Sandy Mascia; his four children, Rick Mascia (Beth), Diane Mascia (Anthony Forte), Mary Katharyne Mascia Rizzo (Steve) and T.J. Mascia (Molly); his four granddaughters that lovingly knew him as “Grandy:” Katharyne Mascia, Megan Mascia, Sofia Rizzo and Emerson Mascia; his brother Steve Mascia (Jane) and sister Kathy Hartman (Mike); sister-in-laws Diane Marchetta (Frank), Sherry Dickey and Donna Stephens; brother-in-law Ray Frasure (Judy); his many loving nieces and nephews; and his beloved ”Grandpup,” Mattox.
