Frank C. Clark

Frank C. Clark, 95, of Friends Homes West, completed his journey to heaven on February 4, 2012. He was preceded in death by his parents and his beloved wife, Nancy, with whom he shared a wondrous 62 years.

A Celebration of Life service will be held in the Living Room of Friends Homes West, 6100 West Friendly Avenue, Greensboro, NC on Thursday February 9th at 3:30 PM.

Frank graduated from the University of Kentucky in 1939 with a BS degree in commerce and worked for US Rubber Co. and Grumman Aircraft before enlisting in the army in 1942. He served his country, stateside and overseas, for four years during World War II, four years in Organized Reserves and two years in the Korean conflict. He completed his service as a Captain in the Army Engineers.

Soon after returning from World War II, he started a thirty-one year career of varied and interesting assignments and locations with Western Electric Co., retiring in 1978 as a Department Chief. His assignments placed him in Canada, Alaska, Pennsylvania, Washington DC, North Carolina and four times in New York City.

From early youth, Frank was an active volunteer. In the various places where he has lived, he offered his services to his schools, churches, the American Legion, American Red Cross, Community Chest, United Way, the American Association for the Blind, the Kennedy Foundation, Telephone Pioneers, YMCA, Boy Scouts, United Services for Older Americans, Mobile Meals, local and state senior games, Junior Achievement, US Masters Swimming and Friends Homes West.

In 1960, he and Nancy qualified together as Red Cross Water Safety Instructors and followed that with additional training for working with various physical handicaps. For the next twelve years, they applied these skills to teaching swimming and lifesaving, including a period of teaching swimming to blind youths and adults.

In 1976, Frank organized the Triad Masters Swim Team and served as its volunteer coach for its first ten years. When he retired from coaching, the team named its annual swim meet, the “Frank Clark Masters Open”.

In 1984, Frank and Nancy were presented jointly with the National YMCA Distinguished Service Award, recognizing ten years of community service since arriving in Greensboro.

Frank was a member of Westside Chapel and the John Willitt Bible Study. He was a Life Member Mason in F&AM, Royal Arch and National Sojourners.

At his direction, his body has been donated to the Medical School at UNC Chapel Hill.

Frank is survived by his cousin, Margaret (Peg) Kolmar and her husband, Klaus, sister-in-law, Sally Parsons and the many offspring of his cousins and Nancy’s siblings.

In lieu of flowers, it is requested that remembrances be directed to Westside Chapel, 5000 West Friendly Avenue, Greensboro, NC 27410 or to Friends Homes West Residents’ Assistance Fund, 6100 West Friendly Avenue, Greensboro, NC 27410.
