Esther Jarvis Heilig

Esther Leah Jarvis Heilig passed away on February 19, 2023, ending a long life of love and service for God and her fellow human beings. She was always faithful in caring for others by taking food to the hungry through Mobile Meals, visiting the sick, and visiting with the elderly and lonely. Esther was born May 3, 1920, to Eugene Jackson (E.J.) Jarvis and Myrtle Scarborough Jarvis. She grew up in rural Guilford County. On September 15, 1940, she married Walter Clarence Heilig. After Walter attended Philadelphia College of the Bible and New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary, they had a long career serving Baptist churches in northern New York, New Jersey, the Eastern Shore of Virginia, and Florida. Upon retirement they lived in Greensboro, NC, and attended Immanuel Baptist Church, where Esther was a charter member. There she has taught a women’s Sunday School class and been active in the Women’s Missionary Union. Esther was preceded in death by her husband Walter, her parents, her stepmother Blanche Green Jarvis, brothers Bruce Jarvis, Spurgeon Jarvis, Wilbur Jarvis; sisters Dorothy Cheshire, Bonnie Payne, Carol Belch, and Jean Phillips. She is survived by her daughter, Retta Lee Heilig Plunkett (Phil) and son, Timothy Forest Heilig (Cindi); grandchildren, Rhonda Plunkett, Sherri Bosely (Bryan), Melanie Plunkett, Philip Plunkett (Kathryn); great-grandchildren, Megan Bosely, Isaac Bosely, Ethan Manass, Adalyn Plunkett, and Jackson Plunkett. Many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great- nephews will always lovingly remember Aunt Esther (known by Aunt Eck to some). The funeral will be at Immanuel Baptist Church, 2432 W. Gate City Boulevard, Greensboro NC at 11:00 Saturday, February 25, 2023. Visitation will be from 9:45 to 10:45 the same day at the church. After the funeral, burial will be at Guilford Memorial Park, 6000 W. Gate City Blvd., Greensboro NC. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Immanuel Baptist Church at the above address.
