Edward Joyce Mitchell, 98, affectionately known as Beany, passed away November 30, 2015, at Moses Cone Hospital surrounded by his family. He went to Heaven a few days after playing golf and enjoying two Thanksgiving meals with his family on Thanksgiving Day.
A celebration of life service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, December 4, 2015, at Hanes Lineberry North Elm Chapel, 515 North Elm Street. The service will be officiated by, Dr. Steve Pressley from First Baptist Church, where Edward was a lifelong member. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
Edward served his country during World War II in the United States Army and was stationed in the Philippines. He retired as superintendent from the United States Post Office after thirty three years of employment. He was an avid golfer with seven holes in one.
Mr. Mitchell was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Lassiter Mitchell; son Eddie Mitchell; daughter, Janice Smith and son-in-law, Bill Haney. He is survived by his daughters, Joyce Haney from Rocky Mount, NC, Joan Frase (Doug) of Akron, OH; son-in-law, Bill Smith of Greensboro; brothers, Earl Mitchell (Jeanette), Clyde Mitchell (Evelyn) both of Greensboro; sister, Mary Little (Ed) of New Mexico, eight grandchildren and eighteen great grandchildren. Also surviving are several nieces, nephews and cousins.
The family wishes to thank his caregivers, Tabitha, Barbara, Karen, Larry and Dave.
