Dorothy Murneal Johnson Harris, affectionately known as Dot, died peacefully on June 23rd while in residency at Camden Place Nursing and Rehab, Greensboro, NC after an extended decline from Alzheimer’s Disease. Dot would have celebrated her 88th birthday on June 25. She grew up on Valley Park Drive, graduated from Greensboro Senior High School and entered the workforce at Mojud Hosiery Mill a few weeks later. She married Harvey Dean Harris and they had two daughters. Dot was employed by Dow Corning Corporation for 30 plus years and had the distinction of being their first female Machine Operator. When promoted to this position, Dot was presented a customized pink tool box with pink handled tools.
At her retirement, Dot opened a small craft business specializing in supplies for Chrismon (Christ Monograms) ornaments; Craft Square was a primary resource for churches and classes in Greensboro and surrounding areas. Dot designed many of the ornaments herself and has left a beautiful collection for her family. During this time, Dot also worked as cashier at the Holden Road location of K&W Cafeteria where it was her great joy to reconnect with classmates, church and neighborhood friends.
Dot was a member of Christ Wesleyan Church, serving several years as VBS Director and chair of the Pastoral Care committee. While her daughters were still at home, she drove countless miles transporting and facilitating youth activities and was a faithful member of the YMCA’s Camping Club.
Dot is preceded in death by her husband, Harvey Dean Harris (1968), her mother, Mattie Beason Johnson (1971) and all her siblings. Left to cherish her memory are her daughters, Deana Harris Kennedy (Greg) of Greenville, NC and Doreen Harris of Greensboro. Also, her grandchildren, Aaron Kennedy (wife Lauren) and Miriam Wamer (husband Jared) and 3 great grandchildren, Wesley Clark and David Aaron Kennedy, and Kennedy Dot Wamer.
In keeping with her wishes, Dot was buried beside her husband at Guilford Memorial Park following a private graveside service. The family desires for her memory to be honored and celebrated by those who knew her by continuing to do for others as she did…drive the extra mile, find the right solution, solve the problem, strive for excellence, care more and do more for others.
