Funeral services will be held at Hanes-Lineberry Sedgefield Chapel on Thursday, March 10, 2022 at 2:00 pm. She will be laid to rest next to her husband in Guilford Memorial Park Cemetery immediately following the funeral service. The family will receive friends Wednesday evening, March 09, 2022 at the funeral home from 6:00 until 8:00 pm.
Doris was born November 4, 1937 to the late Robert Carl and Effie Clark Whitesell. She was married to the late J. R. Self on January 24, 1959. He passed away on July 7, 1992.
Doris is survived by daughters, Robin Suzanne Self and Dana Lynn Self Fryar; a special son-in-law, Philip M. Fryar; childhood friend, Ruby Greene Wilhoit; and several nieces and nephews.
She grew up on Dillard St. from the time she was born until she married. Doris said she wouldn’t take anything for her childhood. Her dad died when she was five years old. Her mother was left with four girls under the age of eight. Doris said they were fortunate to have good neighbors. “I loved growing up on Dillard St. My family and I have been blessed with a lot of friends and I love each one of you”. Doris was a former member of Asbury United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women. She received a recognition pin in 1997. She was currently a member of Muir’s Chapel United Methodist Church.
Doris was preceded in death by her sisters, Virginia Whitesell Howell and Betty Faye Whitesell.
She wanted to thank her cardiologists, Dr. Dalton McLean and Dr. Thomas Stuckey; and her primary care doctor, Dr. Stacey Blyth.
