A service of celebration will be held at 3:00 pm Sunday, September 29, 2013 at Grace United Methodist Church, with Rev. Mark Weekley officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church from 2 until 3 pm. Mrs. Owens will be laid to rest beside her husband at Westminster Gardens Cemetery that same day, prior to the services. Mrs. Owens will lie-in-state at Hanes-Lineberry North Elm St. Chapel from 2 until 5 pm Saturday afternoon and from 9 until 12 pm Sunday morning at the funeral home. She was born on December 18, 1921 to the late Robert Millikan Richardson and Jessie Ellen Sikes Richardson in Greensboro NC. Doris graduated from Women's College (UNCG) in 1943 with a degree in Home Economics. She was married for 57 years to Louis Hudson Owens having four children. After raising her family, she went back to school, received her teacher's certificate, and taught Home Economics and Vocational Education at Gillespie, Smith and Dudley High Schools until she retired.
Her family was the most important thing in her life. She played a big part in raising all of her grandchildren and great grandchildren even into her late 80's. She was an avid bridge player and played with the same bridge club (organized in the fifties) until two months before her death. Doris was a charter member of College Place UMC, later moving to Grace UMC in the mid-sixties. She was a member of the Board of Steward's and taught the Faith Builders Sunday School Class for many years. She enjoyed sewing, cooking, reading, gardening, and sharing the plants she grew in her yard with all her friends and neighbors. In her 80's, she mastered the computer for the purpose of playing Spider Solitaire, Bridge, and Scrabble, and to enjoy the delightful pictures and videos of her great grandchildren. She faithfully and lovingly cared for her father, husband, sister, mother, and brother before their deaths. In addition to her parents, Doris was preceded in death by her husband, Louis Hudson Owens; sister, Jean Richardson; brother, Robert “Bobby” Millikan Richardson, Jr.; and a son, David Richardson Owens. She is survived by son, Robert Louis Owens and wife Nan of Goldsboro.
